SIGNAL DIAGRAMS AND PHOTOS
TRAIN DESCRIBER NUMBER SYSTEM:
This system of train numbering was introduced to separate the WTT districts from the late seventies.
 

In Melbourne all trains are given a train describer number derived as follows:

First Digit:

0            City Circle.

1            Epping and Hurstbridge Lines.

2            Glen Waverley and Alamein Lines.

3            Belgrave and Lilydale lines beyond Camberwell.

4           Dandenong/Cranbourne/Pakenham and Frankston Lines.

5            Upfield and Craigieburn Lines.

6            Sydenham, Williamstown and Werribee Lines.

7           Special Services (circulars are issued on an as required basis) 

8            Non Electric Passenger services (see below)

9            Goods Trains (see below)

R            Showgrounds or Flemington Racecourse Line.

X           Sandringham Line.

 

Second Digit:

0            Operates direct to Flinders Street

1                                    "

2                                    "

3                                    "   

4                                    "

5                                    "   

6            Operates via underground Loop

7                                    "

8                                    "

9                                    "

Third and Fourth Digits:

Even numbers Up trains to Flinders Street.

Odd numbers Down Trains from Flinders Street.

 

 

Locomotive hauled trains which originate or terminate in the metropolitan area are given describer numbers in this range.  There are some inter regional trains that are given the number of the destination ie 9280.

First Digit:

0        Light Locomotives

8        Locomotive hauled passenger trains

9        Goods trains

Second Digit:

0       Trains to and from the Northern region, to and from Melbourne or within the region.

1       Trains to and from the North Western region, to and from Melbourne or within the region.

2       Trains to and from the South Western region, to and from Melbourne or within the region.

3       Trains to and from the North Eastern region, to and from Melbourne or within the region.

4       Trains to and from the Eastern Region, to and from Melbourne or within the region.

5       Trains running within the metropolitan region.

6       North Eastern Standard gauge trains to and from Albury.

7       Western Standard gauge to and from Serviceton. (Introduced in 1995)

8       Through standard gauge trains from Albury to Serviceton. (Introduced in 1995)

Third and Fourth Digits:

Even numbers denote Up trains.

Odd numbers denote Down trains.
